Main Building Project 2002

In February, 2002 the St. Mark Development Council engaged the firm of SlaterPaull Architects, to prepare a report concerning the short and long term space needs of the St. Mark parish community. After interviews with staff, ministry leaders, and four large group meetings with the entire parish and church "Council of 100," the following long range needs were identified.

Representatives of SlaterPaull Architects, conducted the fact finding sessions, working in unison with Marchita Mauck, liturgical design consultant for the project. Current needs, long range needs, and future dreams were discussed. This process identified the spatial requirements in a new church facility for the next 20-25 years.

On May 21, the Development Council and Fr. Larry made a presentation on the Church Facility Long Range Master Plan to Bishop Hanifen and the Diocesan Building and Properties Commission. Numerous conceptual site plans were analyzed with regard to placement of buildings, open space, on-site parking, traffic flow, and ability to raise capital funds. The most important site considerations were based on visibility, split parking arrangements, useable outdoor open spaces, and expansion capabilities. Four schemes were developed (A, B, C, and D) which led to "E" incorporating as many parishioner comments and concerns as possible.

The Master Site Planning Process included six steps:

  • Gather Needs Information from Parishioners, Staff and Lay Leadership
  • Understand Ministry and Space Relationship Needs
  • Develop Program Requirements
  • Perform Site Analysis
  • Produce, Evaluate and Revise Concept Drawings
  • Develop Preliminary Estimates and Phasing

The Executive Summary, based on current needs, the parish's assumption of growth potential and facility needs based on interviews with ministry staff, servant ministry leaders and four Council of 100 parish-wide listening sessions, suggests "long term facility needs would be approximately 73,000 square feet for ministry function."

The total building scope is anticipated to be divided into three possible phases:

and owner cost allowances are included in Phase I
