"Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:40
As an ordained member of the clergy, the permanent deacon ministers in the community as a representative of the Church, not only in his official ministry but also in his workplace and in his interactions with his family. Deacons can assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass .. by receiving gifts from the people and distributing to the people in turn the sacred gifts from the altar. They may announce the general intercessions, preach the homily, and act as ordinary ministers of baptism.

Deacons are involved in direct service to the needy; to the ill, the abused and battered, the young and the old, the dying and bereaved, the deaf, blind and disabled, those who have known suffering in their marriages, the homeless, victims of substance abuse, prisoners, refugees, street people, the rural poor, the victims of racial and ethnic discrimination and many others.
